National Football Development Plan

PLAN TO MAKE AUSTRALIA A WORLD LEADER IN THE WORLD GAME

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today launched its National Football Development Plan aimed at 'Making Australia a World Leader in the World Game.'

After an extensive review of football development both in Australia and overseas, the FFA today released the plan for a whole of sport approach to provide greater support to the grass roots community and eliminate the gaps that exist in the development of our elite men and women footballers.

The new plan was created through extensive consultation and research and draws on existing programs and systems, together with a suite of new initiatives. It highlights the two distinct but interconnecting areas of football development:

* Game Development - Aimed at developing the infrastructure and programs around the broad base of the sport that supports the grass roots at the community level.

* Talented Player Development - Aimed at providing a clear pathway and specialised development for the most talented of Australian footballers.

The objectives of the plan are:

Improve the overall technical standard of Australian player base
Design and oversee delivery of the best participation experience in Australian sport
Identify, attract and retain more and better athletes particularly in the 12-16 age
   group
Convert participants to life-long fans of the Australian game
Increase the number of accredited coaches and referees
Ensure facilities keep pace with demand

FFA Chairman Mr Frank Lowy said that a consistent national plan was necessary to ensure that there were opportunities for all to play the game and that talented players were highly skilled to progress through a national pathway.

"For Australia to remain truly competitive on the World stage we must find ways to take the excellent but limited resources available across the country, and through innovation and collaboration, maximise the efficiency and effectiveness in attracting and developing the finest possible Australian players and teams of the future," said Mr Lowy.

"Serving the community is one of the FFA's four strategic priorities and we have worked hard to develop this plan along with a substantial amount of work which has already been done to create relationships, technology and expertise to allow the FFA to provide significant benefits to the broad football community."

FFA CEO Mr Ben Buckley said the program was well supported by the State and Territory Federations and that it was aimed to foster life-long support of football.

"The FFA has set about providing high quality leadership and support for Member Federations and the football community which continually raises the standard of Australian football," said Mr Buckley.

"Even with the absence of a co-ordinated national football development plan we have seen both our senior men's and women's teams in the past two years make it past the group stages of their respective World Cups. Imagine the success Australian football teams can achieve with the commitment of everyone to work to this plan. With these new structures and initiatives in place we can build upon the success already achieved and produce even better results."

Highlights of the National Football Development Plan include:

All junior players will begin their football experience playing small-sided games
A National skills testing program
The introduction of a national youth league with all Hyundai A-League clubs
(except Wellington) involved plus the Australian Institute of Sport
The establishment of a National Women's League
Comprehensive review of referee development
Regular coaching conferences utilising the best credentialed coaches from around
the world including a major coaching conference around the FIFA Congress in May 2008
Targeted coaching courses for elite coaches
Customer Relationship Management System project

Throughout the process of developing the plan the FFA engaged with a diverse range of stakeholders in football development including Member Federations, Hyundai A-League clubs, District Associations, State Clubs, State and National Institutes of Sport, Schools, private academies, coaches, referees, players (through the Professional Footballers Association) and other interested individuals. Written submissions, workshops, briefings and individual consultations have ensured that the wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm in the development of the game has been tapped.

The plan includes the outcomes of the Talent Development and Identification Review which analysed the systems and practices of major football countries (Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Japan, the Netherlands, USA) as well as a review of the FFA's current structures and those employed by other sporting codes in Australia.

The National Football Development Plan is a long-term project with the various initiatives phasing in with some activities already underway.

National Registration Fees

- Report courtesy of www.footballaustralia.com.au

Football Federation Australia has recently informed its member state federations, football associations and clubs that for the first time since 2002 there will be a change to the national registration fee in 2008.

Football has ambitions to compete with other major sports in this country. However, to do so it needs to strive to match the investment the other codes make at all levels of the game to ensure that football can compete with the other sports for participants, elite players, corporate sector support, media attention, spectators and volunteers, as well as be competitive internationally.

There has been a transformation in football in recent years. Extensive governance reforms to unite the game under one constitutional framework; the Socceroos and the Matildas made their respective World Cups in 2006 and 2007; the Hyundai A-League has been established, crowds are at all time records and we are attracting new fans to the game; we have been admitted to the fastest growing football region in the world, the Asian Football Confederation; and we have introduced new community and coach development programs, with a lot of hard work and investment in the area of football development still to come.

As part of the investment in the sport, the FFA will this week be releasing the first ever National Football Development Plan for Australian football.

The National Football Development Plan will benefit all players at grassroots level, as well as give talented young players the opportunity to achieve their dreams and become a Socceroo or a Matilda.

This plan seeks to provide the opportunity for every child who plays to be able to develop new skills, to improve their technical proficiency, and to do so in a safe, positive and enjoyable environment; and for those young people who are talented, the FFA needs to deliver high quality coaching that continuously builds skill levels and technique, and which gives them the right competitive opportunities throughout their career.

FFA will provide leadership, consistency and additional resources through the National Football Development Plan to achieve these outcomes.

The priority areas for investment include:

:: coach education for grassroots coaches so young players learn the right technique and build skills in a fun and safe environment

:: an improved coaching pathway with progression to other coaching levels if desired

:: the recruitment, retention and education of referees

:: developing facilities to match the growing participation rate to ensure that as many people who wish to play football can do so

:: consistent schools programs to give more young people an opportunity to play the game and find a way to access club football

:: the introduction of small sided games across the country to make the game more enjoyable for younger children, as well as to develop technical proficiency

:: supporting the network of parents and other volunteers who are the backbone of the sport through volunteer development programs

:: providing a national online registration system for all football clubs in Australia which includes the capability for self-registration and competition management, saving many hours of time for club volunteers

:: supporting our talented player development pathway programs, including appointing appropriate coaches, investing in our State and National Institute programs, introducing a National Youth League program and creating a growth plan for women’s football

:: supporting our national teams including the Olyroos, the Young Matildas, the Young Socceroos, the Under 17 women's team, the Joeys, the men's Paralympics team, our National Futsal team and, of course, the Socceroos and Matildas.

To sustain the growth of the game and to allow FFA to provide national leadership in the development and implementation of the programs listed above, the national registration fees have been set as follows:

- Junior Player $10.00 including GST
- Amateur Player $20.00 including GST
- Contracted Player $55.00 including GST

As has occurred since 1996, an amount of $1.10 per player is being returned to each Member Federation for State-specific initiatives.

The FFA looks forward to an exciting growth period and to working constructively with the entire football community to create a regular and open exchange of communication to implement our National Football Development Plan and other key initiatives.

By the FFA acting now to continue to grow and develop the game, the ultimate beneficiary will be football and all those who enjoy playing and watching it.

Alistair almighty

- Report by Shellie Brennan courtesy of the Macleay Argus

ALISTAIR Sinclair was pushed to the limit at the National Youth Championships. But the centre/back was certainly up to the challenge, and a challenge it was competing against the best 14-year-olds from around the country.

Through sheer determination, skill and a strict diet, Alistair and his Northern NSW Football team mates made the grand final of the championships. The team played seven grueling 60 minute games which tested the fittest of players.

The elite competition was summed up in the first round game when Northern NSW came up against very tough opponents, South Australia. Unfortunately South Australia had the upper hand and won 2-1. However, Alistair and his team mates were not discouraged by the result. They went on to beat the teams in their pool matches including Queensland Metro, Northern Territory, Queensland Country, ACT Football. Losing one game in their pool, allowed Northern NSW to finished first.

Teams then had a play off and Northern NSW faced their toughest opponents to date, Victoria Metro. The full time score was 2-2. After extra time the score was locked at 3-3 and a sudden death penalty shoot out was needed to determine the winner. Northern NSW won 6-5, in a nail biting finish to the semi-final.

Alistair's team had made the grand final but the hard-fought semi final win, had taken some of the boy's energy. They met South Australia in the grand final, the only team that had beaten them at the championships. South Australian's semi-final was a tough affair as they beat NSW Metro.

At the start of the championships NSW Metro and Victoria Metro were favorites to make the grand final. But it did not happen, and for Northern NSW and SA the grand final had already been played in the semi-final.

The only game Alistair was nervous playing was the semi. The grand final lacked the luster and skill of both semi-finals and it was an anti-climax for many. The final score was 2-1 in favour of SA.

Alistair learnt a lot from the championships and said it was a whole different playing level. "It was the first tournament that I have played against kids that did professional fouls," he said. "It was part of the game play and tactics. The games in the championships were a real team game, you would get no where as an individual."

With regret the 14-year-old Alistair will take off his soccer boots for the summer. However, he will be kept busy with cricket, swimming club and Hat Head Surf Life Saving over the next couple of months.

Boys Nationals Set For Coffs Harbour Kickoff

Whilst the Socceroos and Olyroos national squads have featured in the media spotlight in recent weeks, the next generation of Australian football stars get their turn as they take to the field in Coffs Harbour next week for the Football Federation Australia Boys National Youth Championships.

Commencing on Saturday September 29th at BCU International Stadium at Coffs Harbour, the Championships will consist of 24 teams made up of over 380 players from around Australia.

National Championships Manager and Northern NSW Football Operations Manager Alan Nisbet said the Championships showcase the best young male players from across Australia.

"The Championships are a hotbed of junior football talent in Under 14 and Under 15 age divisions and provide a valuable identification and selection opportunity for the Australian Joeys national squad as well as the Australian Institute of Sport," Nisbet said.

"The Youth Nationals are generally the first taste of representative football at national level for many of these players but it is certainly not likely to be the last as they go on to pursue their future in football," Nisbet concluded.

Northern NSW Football, who is hosting the championships for the second year, will field a team in each age division.

The first matches in the Football Federation Australia Boys Nationals will commence on Saturday September 29, with the finals in both age divisions to determine National Champions scheduled for Saturday October 6 following a full week of competition.

Port United women fight all the way

FOOTBALL Mid North Coast Women's Saturday League minor premiers Port United was able to complete the double and win a hard-fought grand final 3-2 against a gallant Camden Haven on Saturday.

The Settlers Inn United outfit took the early initiative with attacking moves being set up by wide halves Roxy Dowling and Maryanne Kay. However, the first real chance fell the way of Camden Haven who was awarded a penalty after a dubious hand ball decision.

Justice prevailed when the ball was skied over the bar by Haven's playmaker Shelley Watts.

The introduction into the game of Julie Cordell and right back Claire Royle stabilised the United defence and the opening period ended at 0-all.

United grabbed control of the showdown in the second period with striker Heidi Lavis scoring from the penalty spot and player of the match Cassey Dowling on hand to push in the second after a goalmouth scramble.

The encounter changed dramatically in the last 10 minutes with United seemingly cruising to the final whistle. The Havens secured two goals to equalise and take the decider into extra-time.

In what was the best women's grand final for years, it's appropriate the game was won by a great goal. Dowling gained possession deep in the United half and worked the ball down the sideline. A long pass found sister Lara Dowling, who crossed a pin-point pass to unmarked Lavis, who blasted the winner into the net for a 3-2 victory.

Controversy hits SYL 14s Grand Final

- Report courtesy of Macleay Argus

THE Football Mid North Coast (FMNC) 14s made the trip to Newcastle on Saturday to contest the grand final. FMNC always knew it was going to be a tough game. Playing the Macquarie Football Academy at home is never easy.

Macquarie has seven State players and one National player and is coached by Gary Von Egmond (Newcastle Jets).

The game started at a frantic pace and Macquarie scored a fairly soft goal within seven minutes 0-1. FMNC played themselves back into it and received a string of free kicks. One of these was converted from about 40m out by Adrian Walker.

FMNC were on top, with the back four including local youngsters Alistair Sinclair, Mitch Whalen and Sam Mahoney, looking very solid. With midfield getting some ball forward lone striker Tahwa Bowden was continually dangerous, hassling the Macquarie defence time and again. With one minute to play in the first half a great ball through from Brendan Berry to Blake Clarke saw FMNC score their second 2-1.

Coach Steve Raynor tried to settle his players and asked for total commitment in the second-half. FMNC played as a unit with mid-fielder Chad Applegate making his opposing player look ordinary with elusive footwork. All appeared to be going well with FMNC unlucky not to score again.

Then, in one of their few chances, poor communication in the FMNC box saw Macquarie score a second, which made the game an even contest 2-2. The game continued with some real spite and the local referee struggled to maintain control.

With 30 seconds to play, the referee appeared to award a penalty to FMNC for a deliberate handball in the Macquarie box. Supporters of Mid North Coast started to celebrate then the referee changed his call to a free kick to Macquarie. This left players and officials stunned.

The full time whistle sounded with the score deadlocked 2-2. The referee was escorted from the ground by game officials and refused to answer questions.

Extra time began and FMNC continued to contest but Macquarie, unfortunately, were getting the better of play. In a rare defensive lapse FMNC let a Macquarie through ball be turned back inside and the lone goal scorer for Macquarie bagged a hat trick. FMNC then threw everything forward but it wasn't to be their day & extra time finished with Macquarie on top.

The FMNC boys acquitted themselves well and their supporters made no mistake in letting the Newcastle crowd know who they thought were the winners on the day.

Jets Youth pips FMNC outfit

- by Rod Thompson Port Macquarie News

FMNC Seniors 2 Jets Youth Select 3

THE A-League Pre-Season Cup curtain-raiser proved to be an entertaining encounter between the local Football Mid-North Coast representative outfit and the NBN Newcastle Jets Youth Select team.

A fast open game of football set the scene for the main fixture to follow.

The first half, in particular, provided lots of action, and goals. It was only the third minute when the Jets took the lead after indecision in defence by the FMNC team. The ball crossed along the goal line, evading everyone except Jets player Brad Smythe who only had to pass it into goal.

A lesser side may have been intimidated by such an early setback and against such a highly-rated team. But FMNC hit back in style, playing its own brand of attacking football that employed a short, sharp passing game in the midfield but also using the width of the pitch to open up play.

It was the strike duo of Stephen Ford and Brant van der Linden who benefited from the good work of the team mates behind them. In the 10th minute, van der Linden's pinpoint pass from wide on the right evaded the Jets central defender and found the feet of Ford who ran towards goal and calmly steered the ball wide of the keeper to equalise at 1-all.

Nine minutes later, Ford turned provider when his fierce shot on goal could only be parried by the keeper into the path of van der Linden, who rifled the ball into the net for a well deserved 2-1 lead. For the rest of the half, FMNC controlled most of the play and the Jets did not look like scoring. Good defending forced the visitors to play the ball back into their own half to keep possession.

However, on the stroke of half-time, a free kick was awarded to the Jets just outside the penalty area. Chris Wheeler was able to get above the defence to head into goal and leave the game poised at 2-all at the break.

The second period was more subdued but both sides endeavoured to keep possession to work for opportunities. For the first 20 minutes, the Jets had the greater percentage and were able to turn this into a goal when Joe Virgili broke away to the right of the penalty area and produced a delightful chip over FMNC keeper Col Willis to put them ahead 3-2.

It was then FMNC's turn to enjoy the greater share of the ball but they were not able to break down the organised Jets defence. Ultimately, the Jets Youth Select team was able to see the game out for a deserved but hard fought victory.

A pleasing aspect of this match was the return of former FMNC player Matt Pratt as a member of the Jets squad and he produced an eye-catching display at right back and in the centre of defence.

For the local side, young Port United player Tom Adams was very impressive, showing excellent poise and a controlled passing game. Macleay Valley Rangers' Paul Clarke also worked hard in the midfield with good support from Tim Cook and Josh Peir. Steve Morn and Matt Ramm proved effective in defence and instigated several attacking raids down the flanks.

FMNC coaches Michael Chandler and Marty Ansell were well-satisfied with their team's effort on the day and look forward to the next opportunity for this side to again represent the region and demonstrate the talent on offer in the area.

New Path To Professionalism

New Path To Professionalism Endorsed By National Body

Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) will continue to implement the sweeping changes to football decreed in the Crawford Report, with the blessing of the Football Federation Australia (FFA), with the next step being the introduction of professional management structures within the State's seven (7) zones.

The NNSWF zone structure will remain unchanged, servicing over 50,000 members from Lake Macquarie in the South to Tweed in the Far North and inland to Moree.

The management of the zones however will move away from the traditional committee structure to an elected zone council which will include professional management responsible for each zone. The structure will provide an improved consultative and advisory mechanism for the sport and deliver a central point of information, communication and decision making within each zone.

The change in structure was one of the underlying principles espoused in the Crawford Report, which identified sweeping changes to the sport to bring it in line with the rest of the world.

Importantly the changes will retain the identities and uniqueness of each zone, taking into account the individual needs of players from the expansive area covered by NNSWF.

"Initial discussions are underway with zones in order to develop a strategy for implementation of the new structure," Northern NSW Football CEO Garry Screen said. "We are the first football state under the FFA to implement this structure and we have the FFA's blessing to once again forge a path for the other states to follow."

An EGM will be held on Sunday 22nd July in Port Macquarie to consider the new FFA endorsed NNSWF Constitution which provides for these management structures to be introduced.

The proposed management structures, which will be needed to take the sport into the future, will be introduced in co-operation with the current zones as soon as practicable.

Asian Tour 2007

Tour To Heart Of Asian Cup Confirmed For Northern NSW Juniors

With the focus firmly on the Socceroos Asian Cup campaign, Northern NSW Football will again take a select group of Under 17 players into the burgeoning football region of Asia as part of their 2007 Player Development Program.

With the Football Federation Australia (FFA) National Youth Championship age groups for boys being Under 14 and Under 15, representative opportunities for players 15 years and older are limited and as a result, Northern NSW Football coaching staff view this tour as a vital component of player development.

'The inaugural tour in 2006 was an outstanding success and the boys that went can certainly empathize with the extreme playing conditions that the Socceroos are enduring at the moment,' Football Manager for Northern NSW Football and Tour Co-Ordinator David Smith said.

'The tour aims to give these kids representative experience and to expose them to a region that without doubt will become a hub for our sport in the future,' Smith said. 'They will play against National Youth Teams, on synthetic pitches at superior level national training facilities in Asia, which will leave a lasting impression as they continue to forge their playing future.'

Based on the success of the 2006 tour, the 2007 International Tour will follow the same format, with between 16-20 players selected during the season for the 'off season' tour through Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore during December 2007.

The twelve (12) day tour will include seven formal (7) matches with National Youth Teams, as well as visits and appearances at selected training facilities and centres throughout the region.

With interest already high from players, those wishing to be considered for nomination should notify Northern NSW Football of their interest immediately.

Glory gets winning start

Perth Glory scorer Jamie Harnwell - Photo courtesy of www.a-league.com.auJamie Harnwell's second half goal has given the Perth Glory a winning start to the Hyundai A-League's pre-season competition in a 1-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets at Port Macquarie.

After a cagey first half, Harnwell was played in by in-form Glory forward Nikita Rukavytsya before slotting the ball home in a one-on-one clash with the Jets goalkeeper three minutes after the re-start.

The confidence boosting win for the Glory comes hot on the heels of a successful tour of Malaysia and bodes well for the West Australian team's chances in 2007-08 after enduring a frustrating time last season.

On the unfamiliar turf at Port Macquarie, both sides struggled to come to terms with the bumpy ground as the Glory responded to the conditions by playing a long ball game to its forwards in Harnwell and Rukavytsya.

The two forwards were particularly prominent in the second half as they both set up several unconverted chances for each other, while the Jets struggled to set up opportunities against an improved Glory defence.

Locals eye off ideal opportunity

- Report courtesy of Port Macquarie News

FOOTBALL Mid-North Coast's best players have an ideal opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a home crowd at the Regional Sports Stadium, Port Macquarie, this Saturday.

The Rydges Mid-North Coast under 19s tackle Northern NSW 15s at 10.45am, while the Rydges Mid-North Coast first grade outfit faces a Jets NBN youth select team from 12.15pm.

The Football Mid-North Coast representative concept, the brainchild of Chris Turner in 2006, was heavily supported by several key people in the community.

Both fixtures are curtain-raisers for the A-League Pre-Season Cup showdown featuring the Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory. Due to the success of the event last year, the Jets decided to return and make Port Macquarie one of its regional destinations for the pre-season.

"The matches give local footballers a chance to show their skills and gain possible opportunities for further selection," Rydges Mid-North Coast first grade coach Michael Chandler told the Port News. "After last year's encounters, there are now 10 players in the Newcastle NBN League.

"Ironically, former junior Matt Pratt has been selected for the Jets NBN youth select side to play against us this weekend." Chandler and assistant coach Marty Ansell are very excited about the challenge ahead. "A couple of standout players for Mid-North Coast are co-captains Josh Peir and Paul Clarke," Chandler said. "Their ability to lead the side around the park and skill with ball is second to none. "The squad has also been strengthened by blooding some new talent such as Port United's Tom Adams and Riley Lang.

"The under 19s are just as keen as the firsts. "Port United's Matt Mifsud and Basil Bullock, from the Westpac Port Panthers, are the youngsters to keep a close eye on. "Most importantly, this weekend is all about opportunities and making the most of them. "Everyone is very excited about the prospect of playing with the best in their local competition. "It would be remiss of me not to thank major sponsor Rydges and all parties involved who have made this concept a reality."

Gates open from 10.15am with the main game - Newcastle Jets v Perth Glory - to kick off at 2.30pm.

Northern Squads Offer Experience & Attack

On paper, Northern NSW Football's 15 and 17 years teams for the upcoming Football Federation Australia (FFA) Girls National Youth Championships look set to take it to their more fancied rivals from other States when competition gets underway on July 7.

For 15's coach Krystal Gollan, a team selected with youth as a key ingredient is a decision that will hopefully pay dividends at this years championship but also those to follow. Three (3) players Georgia Peterson, Sarah Grist and Tara Andrews are still under 13, whilst Sarah O'Connor, Courtney Miller, Ashli Deane and Sophie Jones are Under 14 players. All will be eligible for selection again in 2008.

Three (3) players back up from the 2006 National Championships - goalkeeper Kali Mae Anderson; Australian Under 17 representative Rhali Dobson and key midfielder Rachel Wynne.

Of the players selected, twelve (12) of the girls have participated in the Johnny Warren Football Foundation program in the last two years and the technique of these players is an integral part of the teams strength.

Coach Gollan is looking forward to the girls attacking mode of football.

"I'm very happy to be working with such a good group of attack minded players who love to go forward," Gollan said. "And whilst defensively further work is needed, I'm expecting a number of the players selected to catch the eye of institute and possibly National selectors."

The 15's squad fields players from six (6) of the seven (7) Northern NSW Football zones, with Gollan stating that this showed the value of the increased competition at Under 15 level throughout Northern NSW and the benefits of State Youth League players getting regular matches against good opposition. The 17's squad also reflects the depth of talent across Northern NSW with players from each zone represented in the Nationals team.

Highlighting the rosters are four (4) Under 17 Australian representative players in Emily Van Egmond, Melissa Redmond, Libby Sharpe and Taleah Doyle.

A total of six (6) players from last years Nationals team have been reselected, with Laura Byrnes, Laura Hall, Danielle Buttsworth, Kelsie Redman, Libby Sharpe and Gemma Simon eager to improve on last years 6th place, with a spot in the Top 4 the objective.

Four (4) players have been picked for the first time in the Northern team and include Sophie Towner, Ashley Gordon, Gabriel Macdonald and Rhianni Cipta.

For some of the squad, this may be a final chance to impress selectors and open the door for a future professional career in the sport according to 17's coach Anthony Richards.

"I'm confident the girls are ready. They have really worked hard to secure their place in the team and collectively are looking forward to the challenge of competing at the highest possible youth level within Australia," Richards said. "We have a good mix of youth in Emily Van Egmond being the youngest who will turn 14 at this years championship and the maturity of outgoing captains Laura Hall and Laura Byrnes."

The FFA Girls National Youth Championships get underway at BCU International Stadium at Coffs Harbour from Saturday July 7th and continue until Saturday July 14th.

See 19th June news item '15 & 17s Girls NNSWSF Squads' for team details.

A-League: Newcastle Jets V Perth Glory

Witness some of Australia's best National A League football players in a pre-season hit out between the Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory.

At the Port Macquarie Regional Sports Stadium, Saturday July 14.

Jets Pre-season build up

The 3rd annual Hyundai A/League Preseason Cup kicks off in Port Macquarie on Saturday July 14th with Newcastle Jets taking on Perth Glory.

The Pre-season Cup is an ideal chance for teams to gain much needed match practice in the lead up to the season proper kicking off in late August.

In preparation for the Port Macquarie clash the Jets have arranged a number of trial matches against NBN State League sides in the coming weeks and also face the NBN Select side.

Newcastle have signed 3 local Newcastle players as trainees for the 2007-08 season of the Hyundai A-League. Hamilton Olympic's Jason Hoffman, Lake Macquarie's Ben McNamara and Ben Kanterovski have all been given contracts. As trainees, they can only be called up into the senior squad if one of the top 23 players picks up a long-term injury.

Newcastle have shown in the past however, that they are willing to give their trainees a senior contract if they perform as trainees, with Tarek Elrich, Ben Kennedy and Troy Hearfield all starting their time at the club as trainees.

Hoffman and McNamara are both regulars in the first team for their State League clubs, while 15-year-old Kanterovski is still at school, attending Lambton High and is also in the Northern New South Wales 15 years state squad playing the under card game versus Football Mid North Coast.

Rising stars receive boost

- by Rod Thompson Port Macquarie News

RISING local football stars Rhali Dobson, Sophie Jones and Salianne Buttsworth have been selected from 8500 junior players across Northern NSW to receive a McDonald's Northern NSW Football Scholarship.

The Port Macquarie scholarship winners will be presented with a cheque for $500 by McDonald's owner/operator John Ross and Northern NSW Football to help further their training and development in the sport.

"We are so thrilled to award this scholarship to these players," Ross said. "They are outstanding young sportsmen and sportswomen and we hope that this $500 will assist each of them with ongoing training, equipment and transport."

According to Alison Fazzolari, Mid-North Coast director of coaching, the winners are all worthy recipients. "These girls have consistently displayed a passion for the game and dedication to training," she said. "I know the players have a bright sporting future ahead and this scholarship will certainly help them along the way."

David Smith, Northern NSW Football manager, states they were grateful to McDonald's Northern NSW restaurants for their ongoing commitment to football in the region. "Due to their financial support, we have been able to develop and grow junior football at grassroots level and encourage more children to lead a balanced, active lifestyle," Smith admitted.

McDonald's and Northern NSW football scholarships have helped more than 80 junior players realise their sporting dreams. Matildas' player Jenna Tristram was one of the first scholarship winners when she captured the eye of development officers back in 2004.

The football scholarships form part of an $85,000 sponsorship between McDonald's and Northern NSW Football, now in its fourth year.

U/14s: Kempsey Hornets withdrawal

The Kempsey Hornets U/14 team has withdrawn from the competition.

At this stage each match involving the Kempsey Hornets U/14 team should be treated and recorded as a 3-0 forfeit to the opposing team.

Each week there will be one bye and one forfeit for that age group. After speaking with the Draw Manager there are a number of problems doing a redraw for this age group. A redraw would mean major changes to the entire Friday night competition for all teams. There would be errors with importing the current results and result table for that age group into a new draw etc.

To date the team that has the bye has chosen to play the team that has the forfeit in a friendly 'trial match' atmosphere where field availability permits. This will be approved each week to both the team having the bye and the team having the forfeit if they would like to continue with this practice.

L-plate vests for young refs cut the sports rage

by Louise Hall and Caroline Marcus
Article Source: www.smh.com.au

L-plate vests for young refs cut the sports rageINCREASING outbursts of ugly sports rage by abusive players, coaches and parents have forced beginner referees to wear the equivalent of young drivers' L-plates.

NSW Sport and Recreation has issued sporting clubs and associations with brightly coloured yellow vests emblazoned with "In Training" to be worn by trainee whistle blowers. Since its inception in September 2006, more than 90 clubs and associations in NSW have registered for the program. A range of sports have signed up, including athletics, soccer, touch football, hockey, netball, rugby league, water polo, baseball and BMX racing.

The manager of community sport and recreation for NSW Sport and Recreation, Kerry Turner, said there were fewer uglier scenes in sport than a young referee being yelled at and berated by players and spectators. She hoped players and spectators would understand that young referees were inexperience and be more tolerant of their mistakes.

"It's similar to when you learn to drive and have L-plates on; people are more tolerant," she said.

Sport and Recreation Minister Graham West said the vests, which were based on the successful South Australian green shirt program, were a practical way of giving young referees confidence while they learned the ropes. "It's a terrific mentoring program which allows them the space to evolve as referees in their chosen sport without fear of harassment," he said.

More than half of the 23 junior clubs in the Canterbury District Soccer Football Association have begun using the vests this season. Association secretary Elizabeth Sadlier said the program had helped remind parents and players they must respect referees, or there would be no one to officiate games. "We have enormous difficulty retaining referees, so it's very important to protect the younger ones so they go on to referee the senior games," she said.

Sarah Long, 13, said she had noticed a fall-off in the amount of heckling by parents and spectators since she has worn the yellow vest. "It makes you look more official and [you] get more respect," the junior referee said.

Sports rage is something the host of Channel Ten's The Biggest Loser, Ajay Rochester, knows about all too well. Rochester was cheering on her son Kai, 7, and his Queens Park under-eight soccer team at a game on May 19 when she was abused. She had tried to intervene in an argument between two fathers about a penalty shot and was told to "go back to whatever trailer park you came from".

"It's great to cheer when your kids get a goal, but to get angry and upset is just a waste of time and energy," she said. "If you want children to grow up and be decent human beings and have respect for each other, it's got to start from us."

Football NSW member protection officer Michelle Hanley said that the type of behaviour described by Ms Rochester was unacceptable and needed to be addressed.

GREEN & GOLD ARMY TEAM UP WITH JOHNNY WARREN FOOTBALL FOUNDATION

Australia's national football teams supporters group, the Green and Gold Army (GGArmy), and the Johnny Warren Football Foundation (JWFF) have recently formalised a partnership to maintain the legacy and vision of Australia's greatest football ambassador.

The Green and Gold Army will soon continue production on a series of commemorative merchandise honoring the most famous of Socceroo skippers, raising funds for the JWFF's important grassroots football programs.

Green and Gold Army Organising Committee member Tim Buchanan is excited by the formalisation of an already strong relationship. "There is a tremendous synergy between the Green and Gold Army and the JWFF and we are pleased to be moving forward with the alignment," says Buchanan. "Johnny was a great supporter of the concept of the 'GGArmy' and was an official ambassador of the group in its embryonic stages. The GGArmy has had a great deal to do with the foundation in the past and raised money for their programs through merchandise and events. The group is now stepping up our relationship is looking forward to some successful joint inititiatives that put in place finances to resource pathways for future Socceroos and Matildas."

JWFF Chairman Andrew Kemeny says that being involved with the national team's supporters group is a great partnership for the JWFF. "The GGArmy represent more than 10,000 passionate Australian football fans in more than 50 countries around the world. It is a group that shares many of the ideals that Johnny held dear. We are happy to be working with them to build the profile of the JWFF and have nothing but praise of their on-going assistance in growing the grassroots of Australian football."

Bawling at kids is out, coaches told

Link to a section of the Dept Sport & Rec website that contains a variety of behaviour management (sport rage) guidelines. Click here for more information...PARENT rage is well documented on the sidelines of children's sporting events, but now coaches are getting in on the action.

Football NSW has sent an email to more than 1000 clubs after a torrent of complaints about abusive coaches.

"The latest call today was about a 45-year-old coach of an under 8s team who got down into the face of a child and yelled abuse at him and belittled him in front of his team mates until he broke down in tears. Why?
Because he didn't kick the ball straight!!!!," the email said.

Michelle Hanley, member protection information officer at Football NSW, said she sent the email to steer the game's focus back towards fun.

"What was to be gained by reducing this child to tears? AND, how does this help the child enjoy the game?" she wrote. "I am ABSOLUTELY appalled at some of the things I am hearing about how the clubs chose to deal with these issues. Many think that asking the child to leave the club is the answer!!!"

Football NSW has 220,000 players, about 180,000 of them children.

Coach behaviour is being targeted as part of the Sports Rage Prevention Program run by NSW Sport and Recreation. Sports Rage Prevention kits were sent to clubs last November. About 1000 of the 4000 kits went to soccer clubs.

A spokesman for the Minister for Sport, Graham West, said the program had been well received. It began as a poster campaign and grew into an instructional DVD last year.

Further changes are expected, but the spokesman said responsibility lay with individuals. "The ultimate answer to sports rage is people taking responsibility for their behaviour," he said. "It's important that people understand the impact of their rage not only on their own families but to the sporting community at large," he said.

The president of Football NSW, Ian Holmes, said coach rage was a societal problem. "We're trying to work through it as best we can," he said. "We're trying to ensure that the win-win philosophy in everyday life does not filter down into junior sport."

Most coaches were volunteers, and many were educated through DVDs outlining drills and conduct requirements. Mr Holmes said ensuring that the coaches provided children with a fun environment was a "moral responsibility".

Marty Beesley, who coaches an under-7s team in Collaroy, said children looked up to him as a role model and took on his advice like "sponges". "We got a pack about coaching but it's all common sense, really," he said. "You'll always get someone who'll take it too far."

Jonathan Elvy, 6, has been playing soccer for three years. He said he liked his coach. "He's nice, and kind," he said at training last night. His mother, Naomi, said: "In these age groups, taking to the field is not competitive. There are no reasons to yell at kids this age."

The Dept Sport & Recreation website contains a variety of behaviour management (sport rage) guidelines that would be of interest to club administrators & others.

From the website one can print off easy-to-use documents for implementing sport rage prevention strategies.

Included are five sport rage prevention kits, each tailored towards a different club member: the parent, the player, the coach, the referee/umpire and the ground official.
These kits contain fact sheets, comic strips and quizzes and are designed for club administrators to download and distribute among club members in order to raise awareness about sport rage.

Matildas in Coffs Harbour

The Australian Women´s national team, the Matildas - Photo courtesy of Football Federation Australia

MATILDAS TO CALL COFFS HARBOUR HOME
FOR BEIJING QUALIFYING CAMPAIGN

The Australian Women´s national team, the Matildas, will call the NSW Coastal city of Coffs Harbour home for their qualification matches for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Australian team must overcome Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei and Asia´s top-ranked team DPR Korea (North Korea) if they are to appear in their third successive Olympic football tournament.

The Matildas will play all three of their crucial home qualification matches at the BCU International Stadium, and also spend a significant amount of time in camp in Coffs Harbour prior to this September´s FIFA Women´s World Cup in China.

The Matildas will debut in Coffs Harbour against Hong Kong on Saturday 7 April, followed by DPR Korea on Sunday 10 June and the final home qualifying match against Chinese Taipei on Sunday 12 August.

The Matildas are currently ranked at an all-time high of 14 in the FIFA Women´s World Rankings on the back of a second-placed finish in last year´s AFC Women´s Asian Cup and their qualification for the World Cup.  The Matildas also recorded comprehensive victories last month against Myanmar, Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei in the preliminary stage of Olympic qualifying.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) chief executive Ben Buckley says: “We are very pleased that Coffs Harbour will host the Matildas in their vital qualification matches and on behalf of the FFA I would like to sincerely thank the Coffs Harbour City Council, and also the NSW Government for their continuing support for football in this state.

“The last few years have been wonderful for Australian football and the Matildas have played a significant role with their on-field success, notably in qualifying for the FIFA Women´s World Cup. “The training facilties and stadium in Coffs Harbour are first class and will provide the team with every opportunity for success in these crucial matches.’

“Coffs Harbour has had the pleasure of hosting the Matildas in 2001 with their last visit attracting a crowd in excess of 5,000 spectators,’ said Coffs Harbour City Councillor Bill Palmer. “With these matches being crucial qualification matches for the Beijing Olympics, I´m sure we´re going to see even more supporters out at the BCU International Stadium for their upcoming internationals.

“With our very own Matilda, Jenna Tristram, being a likely part of the squad, I´m positive the community will have even more reason to get behind the team for the games against Hong Kong, North Korea and Chinese Taipei.’

NSW Premier, Morris Iemma welcomed the news that football fans in the region would have the opportunity to see Australia´s elite female footballers in such important matches. "The NSW Government, through its Major Events Board, is pleased to support Coffs Harbour City Council in bringing the Matildas' 2008 Olympic Games qualification matches to Coffs Harbour, one of the jewels of the NSW North Coast,’ Mr Iemma said.

“The Matildas have already qualified for this year's Women's World Cup in China and their recent performances have seen them deservedly attain their highest-ever position in the FIFA world rankings. “I am sure the Coffs Harbour community will strongly support the Matildas as they strive to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a group that includes Asia's top women's team - DPR Korea.

“The Government's support for the Matildas' Olympic Games home qualification matches is recognition of the growth of women's football and part of its four-year partnership with Football Federation Australia to make New South Wales the home of football in Australia. “This includes the Socceroos' prime international matches such as Asian Cup qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers and playoffs plus friendly internationals such as the Uruguay match on 2 June."

BCU International Stadium has hosted a number of national team matches over the years notably the Qantas Socceroos´ preliminary qualification matches for the 2001 FIFA World Cup.  Coffs Harbour is also the current home of the National Youth Championships for both boys and girls.

Rangers make it 3 from 3

Report by Col Willis Macleay Valley Argus

Photo: The victorious Macleay Valley Rangers team. Photo courtesy of the Macleay Valley Argus

THE Coastline Credit Union Macleay Valley Rangers Football Club first grade side has continued their amazing record at the annual Port United six-a-side tournament. The title holders of the last year's premier league secured their third straight win at the tournament and in the process picked up a healthy $1500 in prize money for their efforts.

The team can confidently lay claim to be the superior team at this shortened version of the game as this victory not only gave them a hattrick of titles but showed their dominance after collecting their fifth winner's cheque in the six-year history of the game.

The tournament consisted of 16 teams with half of them coming from Sydney rounding out the numbers. Rangers won their three games on the Saturday, convincingly beating Mayfield (Sydney) 4-0, Port Saints 5-1, and Gunnedah 7-0. The trio of wins placed them at the top of the points table going into Sunday's semi-final.

The first game on Sunday was against a very youthful Port Panthers second side, but Rangers had little trouble running out winners. However, from then on they were pushed all the way having to come from behind to beat the strong Port United side 2-1 to reach the final. The team was on the verge of being knocked out as the home side took the lead in the second half with only 5 minutes remaining. But they levelled through Andrew Potter and inside the last minute of the game Matt Johnstone gave his team the lead with a neat finish to allow them to progress into the final against their arch rivals Port Panthers.

The final was a fast action-packed game with both teams showing plenty of skills mixed in with some aggressive defence with the referee having his hands full controlling the game.

Panthers took an early lead but Rangers hit back with a Johnstone special, when he blasted home with a free kick from 10m out. Josh Taylor gave Rangers the lead with a similar strike to Johnstone's but Panthers then levelled up again for a 2-2 score at full time. A quality turn and shot from Taylor in the golden goal extra time period gave his side the $1500 payout.

Rangers were best served by Steve Morn and Johnstone who both proved almost impossible to pass in defence with their aggressive tackling and when the need arose to attack the both contributed in the goal scoring department with Morn notching up two goals and Johnstone seven. None were more valuable than his winning goal in the semi-final.

Both players were rewarded for their good form by being selected in the Oxley Manning representative side. However, Johnstone declined due to work and family commitments leaving Morn to join team mates Clarke, Taylor and Col Willis in the representative squad to play in rep games in the near future.

NNSWFA New Look Board

New Look Board To Take Northern Into 2007

Northern NSW Football's Annual General Meeting (AGM) has seen the appointment of two new Director's to the State football body's new look Board which has been reduced from nine (9) members to six (6).

The reduction in the Board size is a direct result of recommendations from the Crawford Report into football in Australia.

Current Board Chairman Jeffery Green was returned for a further two years, whilst Deputy Chair John Simpson retained his position. Simpson's contribution to the sport across Northern NSW was also acknowledged with a Life Membership.

Retiring Board members were Dianne Pascoe, Doug Kemp, Jim Barry, Michael Akrill and Eddie Boards.

The new Board consists of Jeffery Green, John Simpson, returning members Phillip Holt and Max Kershaw, along with newly appointed members Peter Moore and Greg Wilson.

Moore, a Senior Education Officer with school education brings a wealth of experience from the school and community sports system, together with a depth of knowledge gained through company directorships.

Wilson, a lawyer, adds even further depth to the Board with his knowledge of legal and statutory requirements for both sport and 'not for profit' organizations a welcome asset.

Chairman Jeffery Green acknowledged the contribution of the departing Board members and welcomed Moore and Wilson to the positions.

'The departing Board members have been integral in the past year to the development of the organizations new Strategic Plan and their legacy will remain, through this contribution, as the sport continues to grow in the years to come,' Green said. 'The new members bring a fresh new approach and in the case of Greg Wilson, a knowledge of the increasingly complex legalities of sport, which will be highly valued in addition to their extensive individual business acumen.'

'Collectively, I feel confident that the new look Board has the depth and experience required to take Northern NSW Football ahead through effective and efficient directorship of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of us,' Green concluded.
